These were my first new paintings for some time. I explored text-to-image AI and found that they randomly designed cars. The early exploration was similar to toy cars, but the designs have become more elaborate. Cars play a significant role in structuring our society and how we exist. I explored the painting process and technical painterly aspects such as volume and perspective. I treated the pictorial space like a still life with a clear light source and controlled depth. I am no great fan of cars, but I find their design and iconography interesting. The AI seems unhindered by preconceptions as it combines designs from a huge range of existing car imagery. My paintings do not represent brands but homogenous automobiles. For the car images, I chose retro and vintage designs. I find it interesting that I choose objects to paint that are not my obsession.
