Fuel stop

2023 and ongoing. These paintings are inspired by climate change and the global reliance on fossil fuels. They depict gas stations set in a dramatic moment of the day, as they would be composed in the establishing shot in a movie. The starting images are created by using a text-to-image AI generator. To give a classical finish, the works use intense colour modelling techniques from the base block colour, on top of which I use transparent glazes. I am using this new technology to generate artificial spaces. The AI algorithm produces slick images that I then realised in traditional methods in acrylic media.

The gas station lay empty. The fluorescent lights still illuminate the need for fuel. In the distance, abandoned cars were discarded as we made our way to the city.
As new technology came into production, there were fewer of us left to use it. Signs told us how good life can be. “Prove it”, we said.
We parked a distance from the electric charging station as the provider approved permission to charge. “We need to go, or we will never make it”.
I coughed. The car is fully charged. The order of a cheeseburger was cold when the unit served it.
The car park lay empty. There were more fuel stations than demand.
The lights of the power station still shined bright. The compound was closed.
Once we were in the city, we refuelled and sat in the warmth of the car heat. Now, all we had to do was decide where to go.
